# What leaves your Mac

Manifield has no account and no server. What does go over the network, when, and to whom.

## Your project stays on your Mac

A project is a folder on your disk. There is no Manifield account and no Manifield server that stores your work. The search index is a file in that folder too.

## What goes over the network

| When | What is sent | To whom |
| --- | --- | --- |
| You use the assistant, import notes, or run research mode | The request: the items the agent reads, your notation, your question, and anything else in its context | The AI provider you chose, directly from your Mac, with your own key or ChatGPT account |
| You sign in with a ChatGPT account | Codex runs as a separate local process and talks to OpenAI | OpenAI |
| The assistant looks up a sequence | The sequence | oeis.org |
| Research mode searches arXiv | The search terms | export.arxiv.org |
| You set up the Python environment, once | Requests for the packages | The Python package index |
| The app checks for updates | A request for a small feed file | updates.manifield.net, then GitHub for the download. Switch automatic checks off in **Settings → General → Updates** |
| You send a bug report | Exactly what the form shows you | The Manifield feedback endpoint |

Cloud models see the context sent to them. Keeping your files on your Mac is not the same as running the model on your Mac.

## Keys

API keys are stored in the macOS Keychain. Codex keeps its sign-in in its own private folder, separate from your personal Codex settings.

## Logs and bug reports

The log and the diagnostics snapshot never contain your project's content: no item text, statements, proofs, prompts or model output. Project paths are replaced by anonymous handles, because a folder name says what someone is working on. The feedback form shows you the literal request before you send it, and the crash report is off unless you switch it on.

## Python

Scripts the assistant writes run in a macOS sandbox with no network access, limited writes and a time limit.
